It has a rich history, well preserved baroque buildings and world famous wines, amongst them the Bull’s Blood, a full bodied red wine. The area of the town was already inhabited in the Stone Age. The first generation of Hungarians occupied this land at the beginning of the 10th century. In the autumn of 1552, Captain István Dobó and his brave soldiers were successful in defending the Fortress of Eger and Northern Hungary from the expanding Turkish Empire. Captain Dobó and his 2500 soldiers, man and women bravely defended the fortress in 1552, against a well armed 60-70 thousand strong Turkish army. Until this time, the Turkish army was thought to be invincible, and the news of its defeat spread across Europe. This victory stopped the spread of the Ottoman Empire for some decades.
